Since spring of 2018, Bodkin students Niko Papa, Barrett Aiken, Alex McCreery, Owen McCreery, and future Bodkin student Griffin Aiken, have been advocating for polysytrene to be removed from Anne Arundel County Public Schools (AACPS). These students were appalled that schools are using polystyrene as it is so awful for the environment. Polystyrene will not degrade when in a landfill and, even worse, breaks down to microplastics that harm our oceans and our health. When incinerated, polystyrene releases chemicals into the air that are harmful for our health. In line with both the changemakers curriculum and our green school initiatives, these students attended Anne Arundel County Council meetings and a Board of Education meeting and spoke to those in charge about the need to rid our schools of polystyrene trays. They also met with a reporter from the Pasadena Voice to share their efforts. On February 19, 2019, the amendment concerning the polystyrene ban in food services (including AACPS) was passed by the Anne Arundel County Council and this was signed into law by County Executive Steuart Pittman on February 28, 2019. Congratulations to these students on being changemakers and stewards of our environment.
PARENT(S)/GUARDIAN(S) OF CURRENT ELEMENTARY SCHOOL OUT-OF-AREA STUDENT
Dear Parent(s)/Guardian(s): Anne Arundel County Public Schools requires all current out-of-area transfer students to submit an Out-of-Area Transfer: Request form each year between March 1 and May 1, 2019. This includes students who will be fifth graders. Here is a link to this form http://www.aacps.org/outofarea. If your request is due to daycare need, please include the Daycare Verification form. This form is located on the website under out-of-area transfer. Daycare requests should be returned to the principal of the requested school. If you are requesting transportation with a daycare request, complete both sections of the form. You will need to provide evidence of a documented hardship in order to be considered for transportation services. If you are not requesting transportation, only complete the top half of the form. If your child’s placement is for any reason other than daycare, please submit the form and supporting documentation (i.e., residency, an updated professional recommendation, etc.) to the requested school. A recommendation must be written by a physician or licensed mental health professional. The recommendation must detail the necessity of this transfer and the intended outcome the professional is seeking for the student. The letter must include all necessary information to be considered for a transfer. Specific information related to the recommendation letter can be found at http://www.aacps.org/outofarea. Please Note: If next year your child's placement request from an elementary school to a middle school is for daycare out of their residential area, the parent(s)/guardian(s) must submit a new form to the requested school between March 1 and May 1, 2019. All other requests must be forwarded to the Office of Pupil Personnel at the address above with appropriate documentation. Families receiving an out-of-area transfer for the current school year should plan for the possibility that the transfer may not be approved for the following year. Incomplete applications will not be accepted. A decision regarding your request will be made in writing within thirty (30) days of receipt of the form. If you have any questions regarding this letter, please contact the Division of Student Services at 410-222-5284. Sincerely, Laurie Jones Coordinator of Pupil Personnel Division of Student Services |
