At long last, we can confirm the rumors are true. After 38 years of service to AACPS with over 21 of those years at Bodkin Elementary School, Alvin “Mr. Al” Talley has announced his retirement for this December. So while we all may feel crazy sad at this news, we are going to wipe away our tears and put on our party hats because we plan to send Mr. Al off with smiles, cheers, and Hip Hip Hoorays!!!! This beloved man deserves no less. Help us spread the news and join us on Friday, October 28 at Chesapeake High School’s football game with Mr. Al. We want to fill the stands with love and support from all the many lives he has touched in the Chesapeake feeder system and throughout Anne Arundel County. Mr. Al’s celebration begins in the parking lot of Our Lady of the Chesapeake from 4:30 to 6:00 pm for hugs, handshakes, best wishes, and shared memories. Then join us at the football stadium for a Hip Hip Hooray after Bodkin’s performance of the Star Spangled Banner. Be sure to get to the CHS stadium ($5.00 entry fee) early enough to get a seat. Please help us spread the word throughout the ENTIRE community. We hope to see many Bodkin current and alumni families. More information will be shared with additional celebration plans. We plan to keep celebrating him until he retires.

A Reminder to all Parents and Volunteers
Social media can be a convenient, fun, and rewarding way to share your life and opinions with family and friends. However, using social media involves certain risks and responsibilities. These guidelines apply to all forms of social media: Under the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA), parents have the right to prevent photographs of their children from being taken in instructional settings. Given that volunteers have no knowledge of which parents have allowed their children to be photographed and which have not, volunteers may NOT take or post online any photographs or videos of students. This includes all school-sponsored events. Thank you for your cooperation with this most important issue of safety for our students. Helping children learn to identify the type of issues they are having with peers is the first step to solving the problem. Often, children hear the word, “bullying” and think, “Yeah…that was mean, I’m being bullied. “ However, many peer interactions, albeit needing adult intervention may not begin as bullying. Bullying is a repeated pattern of behavior that is intended to hurt and needs to be reported and promptly addressed. That being said, children also need guidance in handling other types of conflicts, too, even when it may seem less serious. If your child is struggling with a social situation, consider the language below…
Could your family use a bit of help for the holidays?
At this time, we are preparing assistance for Thanksgiving and Christmas to assist Bodkin families during these trying financial times. Please contact Jenn Elsis if your family would benefit from a little extra help this season and know that confidentiality is respected. Squirtle 1 and Squirtle 2 joined Mrs. Rush’s 2nd Grade Class and Mrs. Duffy’s 4th Grade Classroom on September 17th. Just imagine the excitement these two little creatures have stirred up in our classrooms. The students of each class submitted name ideas and then voted on the most popular name. To our surprise, both classes voted on the ever popular Pokemon name “Squirtle.” Baby Maryland Diamondback Terrapins are part of the Terrapin Connection Program that is a supplemental classroom program offered as part of AACPS/ Arlington Echo's Chesapeake Connections program, and is only available to AACPS/Chesapeake Connections participating classrooms. Operating under a Maryland Department of Natural Resources Scientific Collection Permit, one Northern Diamondback Terrapin (Malaclemys terrapin) is placed in a classroom in October and released in May/June of the following year. During the project, students collect growth data, observe behaviors, learn care and husbandry protocols, and research the natural history of our State reptile. Stay tuned for Terrapin updates throughout the school year.
In the event of extreme weather during car rider dismissal time, the following procedures will be put into place:
** All parents are encouraged to monitor the weather before school and to be prepared for these changes as car rider dismissal will be significantly delayed in order to keep students and staff safe. *** This process will be used VERY rarely. For normal weather conditions, the car rider line will remain the same—behind Bodkin at CBMS. Please plan ahead and send your child in with a rain coat/poncho, rain boots and/or an umbrella. We are initiating our first Twitter Reading challenge of the year! It is time for you to share how you are “Falling into Reading.” Now that the weather is turning a bit cooler, we want to see what you are snuggling up with to read. It could be a book for a homework assignment, for a reading club, or for pleasure. Just snap a picture and post to twitter. Please use the hashtag #Fallintoreading and your child’s grade level Twitter handle. To ensure we count your tweet, make sure you hashtag #FallintoReading and include one of the twitter handles below. The grade level with the most tweets for the month of October will earn Spirit Sticks! Let’s “Fall into Reading!”

As part of Anne Arundel County Public Schools Early Literacy Initiative, our K-5 students are assessed individually with the Fountas & Pinnell Reading Benchmark Assessment System. The information below should help you understand this assessment process.
What is the Fountas & Pinnell Reading Benchmark Assessment? The Fountas & Pinnell Reading Benchmark Assessment is a one-on-one, comprehensive assessment to determine the independent, instructional, and frustrational reading levels. It is used to place students on the Fountas & Pinnell A-Z reading level scale. The grade level expectations for each grade are listed in the October Bodkin Banner. Conducting Fountas & Pinnell Reading Benchmark Assessments allows teachers to... *Determine student’s independent, instructional, and frustrational reading levels. *Determine reading placement levels and group students for reading instruction. *Select texts that will be productive for student’s instruction. *Assess the outcomes of teaching. *Assess a new student’s reading level for proper group placement. *Identify students who need additional support and/or reading intervention. *Document student progress across a school year and across grade levels. *Inform parents of student progress. These assessments began yesterday. If you have questions concerning this assessment, please contact your child’s teacher. IT’S BODKIN ELEMENTARY DAY
