On Friday, we will kick-off of our first annual One School One Book event! We are so excited to begin this national event here at Bodkin to promote family reading and a love of reading in our students!
This reading campaign will coincide with the National Screen-Free week, an initiative designed to promote exercise, movement, and interaction instead of TV, videogames, and cell phone use. We hope you and your family will join in the fun and partake in this reading experience with us! See below for a few FAQs. 1. What is One School One Book? One School One Book is a school-wide literacy initiative to promote the importance of family reading and reading aloud. Through the generous support of our PTA, every student will receive a copy of the book chosen for this year. Families are asked to read the assigned chapters each night. Each morning, there will be trivia questions based on the previous night’s reading. Students with correct answers will be entered into raffles each day. In addition to trivia questions, students will participate in discussion questions in their classrooms and during lunch. 2. What is the book title? The book title will be revealed at a kick-off assembly this Friday. The first few chapters of the book will be read aloud to the students to get them started. 3. How do we participate? A calendar with assigned chapters will be sent home in the book. Keep up with the chapters each night and your child will be ready for the conversations at school the following day. We will update you throughout this shared reading experience with more posts on this blog. Stay tuned! Bodkin’s

We would like to remind everyone that Anne Arundel County Public School buildings and grounds are tobacco free. This means not only do we not allow smoking in our school building, smoking is also not allowed around the building, including our parking lots and other school property and grounds. So even if you are smoking in your car, while you are on Bodkin property, including our parking lots and car-rider line, please refrain from smoking. Please help us spread this positive message about our schools and property being tobacco-free zones!
Mrs. Cheatwood’s ALPS Reading class read the book Naya Nuki by Kenneth Thomasma. Naya Nuki is about a Native American girl who was taken captive and forced to march 1,000 miles from Montana to North Dakota. As a follow-up activity to the book, the class researched different Native American tribes around the United States and presented their information to the rest of the 3rd grade students. Their projects included creating Google Slides presentations with a wide variety of cultural information about the different tribes including crafts and games played by the various tribes. Mrs. Cheatwood’s class ended their day by reading other Native American tales to the other classes. Over all, it was a great experience for all the students.
Going Above & Beyond
As you know, the PARCC Assessments are aligned with the new, more rigorous Common Core State Standards. As we review the scores of our students on the 2017 PARCC assessments and prepare them for the 2018 PARCC assessments, we are aligning our instruction to the higher standards and partnering with parents to support student success on the assessments. For the English Language Arts/Literacy written responses, students are required to “go above and beyond” in answering the writing prompts to achieve the highest score for their written responses. Going above and beyond in answering the writing prompts means that students need to provide a response that goes above answering the question. Receiving the highest score means that they need to analyze and think more, justify their response with convincing evidence and defend their thinking and reasoning. To support students with going above and beyond in their written responses for instruction or assessments, we continue to utilize the Lucy Calkin’s Units of Study Writing Program. This year, we are also implementing “arguing and reasoning” strategies. Furthermore, we are establishing a culture in writing of “Making the Ordinary Extraordinary!” In addition, a wonderful site to help parents understand the standards, PARCC scoring, and how to help their children (in grades 3-5) is: http://www.greatschools.org/gk/common-core-test-guide/parcc-3rd-grade/maryland/ |
