During the first lesson, 4th and 5th Grade students brainstormed positive phrases they might want to write on their rocks. Check out our positivity!
Last week, students visited Global Studies for the first time and we are off to an amazing start. All students are taking part in a public art kickoff project. Students will be painting rocks to be used as public art either around Bodkin or in the community beyond. Students in Kindergarten and 1st Grade are creating rocks to representing themselves, inspired by the book Only One You. Students in 2nd and 3rd Grade are painting rocks with messages that will motivate others to participate in our annual Food Drive. Finally, students in 4th and 5th Grade are painting rocks with positive messages that will be used to spread joy throughout our entire community.

Did you know that we now Hip Hip Hooray on Mondays? It is true! Our Good Citizens of the Week celebration moved to Mondays. What an incredible way to kick off the week. Students names are announced during morning announcements. They head to the Media Center to be recognized personally. Then they receive a locker cling to proudly display their accomplishment. Whether it is for Leadership, Empathy, Team Work, or Problem Solving, our teachers would like to recognize every student by year's end. Hip Hip Hooray, it is Good Citizen Monday! This is a reminder to turn in your Giant Rewards Forms right away! Remember there are some exciting prizes to win including our Grand Prize, which is a Chromebook! This is an easy way to help raise money for Bodkin. All you have to do is turn in those numbers and do your grocery shopping at Giant. It's that easy!

Have you ever wondered what Guided Reading really is and how it helps your child learn to read at or above the expected level? Are you curious about what teachers do to coach students to the next level? Are you looking for strategies that you can use at home to develop a love of reading and strong reading skills in your child? If you’ve answered YES to any of these questions, our 1st Touch Base Thursday may be just the event for you! On Thursday, September 29th, we invite you to join us at your child’s Reading class. Each session will begin with a brief overview on all the technicalities of Guided Reading, then you will visit your child’s reading classroom to see it in action! We will debrief after the visit to share the highlights of what you saw, celebrate the work of our teachers, and answer any questions you have about reading skill development. To help us prepare for your visit (so we can estimate the number of copies to make), please return the RSVP slip by Tuesday, September 27th. GRADE LEVEL SESSIONS WILL OCCUR AT THE FOLLOWING TIMES: Kindergarten 10:10-11:10 2nd Grade 1:55-2:55 3rd Grade & 5th Grade 10:40-11:40 1st grade 12:25-1:25 4th Grade 9:40-10:40 **If you are available at a time other than your child’s grade level guided reading time, you will be able to join with parents visiting the grade level scheduled at the time you arrive. Lobby doors open 10 minutes before each session! Preparations are underway for the grand opening of our Global Studies learning lab! Now all we need are our eager students to take over. Starting the week of September 26th, students will be invited to explore the world and pursue their passions in this carefully crafted space. During a weekly Global Studies class, students will be challenged to think differently, consider new perspectives, and grow in new ways. They will learn to tackle real-world problems in networks of teams by creating meaningful products. Watch out world, here we come!
We have a couple of reminders for you….
Now that students are settling into classroom routines, the PTA would like to begin our year of Box Top collecting.
This school year, the Box Tops Committee wants to introduce a new incentive to raise money for the school. Each month there will be a class winner per grade level, which will win a small prize. All classes will be working towards winning a pizza party at the end of the year. The pizza party will be awarded to the top homeroom in each grade level. The monthly progress will be displayed in the cafeteria. We will begin the monthly contest in October and end in May. The collection submission deadlines are as follows: October 28, 2016 February 27, 2016 November 29, 2016 March 30, 2016 December 21, 2016 April 27, 2016 January 30, 2016 May 30, 2016 In order for your child’s class to get credit, please indicate on a sandwich bag the teacher’s name and grade. Thank you to all the Bodkin families for your continued support and KEEP ON CLIPPING! Need sunshine on a cloudy day? While the day outside was gray and cloudy, inside the school in the cafeteria, students in Mrs. Studwell’s 2nd grade class were beams of sunshine as they warmed the hearts of both students and teachers as they led Bodkin’s first School Meeting for students in grades Kindergarten through 2nd. Smiles were soon evident as two 2nd grade student leaders greeted the 300 students and adults with “Namaste, Namaste,” an Indian greeting, followed by friends echoing that greeting to each other. Next, a few student leaders shared narratives about their first week in second grade. Then, movement, laughter, learning, and community building happened as the 2nd graders led 300 students and adults in dancing to “Move and Freeze!” School Meeting was an incredible way to start the day! Everyone had fun while we were fostering school spirit and community building. Thanks to Mrs. Studwell for empowering her students to be leaders and to the 2nd grade student leaders who inspired us all with their awesomeness!
